However, after the September 11th attacks on the US, and the bombings in Paris and London, as well as various attacks on embassies worldwide, the nature of the travel game has changed....drastically.

New rules went into effect in January of 2007 mandating that all US citizens traveling abroad by air must use a passport. There are land and sea travel requirements as well but those are being phased in.

Here's how to get a passport the best and easiest way avoiding delays and trip cancellation:
1. Apply for a passport which is simple. Applications are available in all federal buildings, including the Post Office, as well as online from the State Department’s website.
2. Proof of citizenship - official birth certificate is what they are looking for. Citizens of other countries you will have to go to your consulate or embassy of your native country.
If you don't have your official government birth certificate you can go to the vital records department of your state to request it.
3. 2 passport ready photos. I got mine at the post office because it had photo capabilities. Check your local post office or go to a retailer with in-store photo booth. Tell them you need your 2 passports photos.
4.Valid government id usually a driver's license, naturalization certificate, previous US passport
5. With any questions call 1-877-487-2778 between 7 a.m. - 12:00 midnight Monday-Friday. You may have some trouble getting through but it is well worth an attempt.
Now you are ready to file your application. There are over 9,000 agencies to file it with around the counrty. So it's easy for you to find one and probably will be physically close to you.
